Evolution Korea
Up until recently the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations the changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less favorable traits. As time passes, this difference in reproduction may result in the creation of entirely new species.
The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits to improve their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like the increase in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They claim that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their fight to remove evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and aids scientists to understand how living things function and develop. Evolution also reveals the relationships between species. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries such as new treatments.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe and life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to note that evolutionary biology doesn't conflict with religious beliefs, since the theory deals only with objects, events and processes within the physical world.
In fact many religious people have come up with ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is essential that science educators stand up for the teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the globe, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. This belief is based on a variety of reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions for example, such as the development of medications or developing new medicines, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas others have a profound faith in God and want to understand how the universe functions.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." The theory says that God creates original species and allows them to change over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will create new species that are like the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they evolved slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR achieved many things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a creationist stance. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
